As a part of maintaining a strong culture here at UINZ every quarter we take our Monthly toolbox on an away excursion.

In June we headed down to the Rakaia River where we jumped on a jet boat; taking an adrenaline-filled ride up the river, reaching our destination we stopped for our tool box meeting and BBQ before splitting off into groups, white water rafting our way back down. The return journey was extremely competitive, wet, and full of laughs. Team building experiences such as these let all of our employees unwind and socialise whilst boosting team morale, communication and supporting our company value ‘One Team, One Goal, One Outcome’

Christchurch City Council – Heathcote & Mount Pleasant – CN4600003979

This project consisted of the installation of 1.3km of DN180 PE and DN150 ductile iron local watermain, 700m of DN63 submain and 1.45km DN350 Seismic Resilient Ductile Iron Pipe (SDRIP), sourced from global DI supplier Kurimoto in Japan.

The installation of this pipework replaced the main water supply which feeds all of Lyttelton, including the port, making it a critical piece of infrastructure. The project included 50m complex overland DI pipework to connect to the existing utility where anchoring and pipe supports were installed along the rock face.

With UINZ appointed as head contractor, it was a crucial opportunity to develop our business and staff capability to install what we believe will become a critical supply of pipe infrastructure across New Zealand. UINZ hosted a training day and currently has 7 staff as approved Kurimoto installers, the most of any business in New Zealand.

Fulton Hogan Civil – Heathcote (wastewater) Package 4 – Pressure Main

The project was the final critical part of a major upgrade to Christchurch City Council’s wastewater assets. The scope of works comprised the construction of the Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour sub-marine pipelines and the Lyttleton Harbour onshore pipeline. It required the installation of 355 and 450 PE wastewater pipeline, including cutting into existing infrastructure. Additional works have been added to the project with the renewal of a water main.

On the back of the success of Wastewater Package #2 with McConnell Dowell, UINZ was invited to tender the final piece of the puzzle which was Wastewater Package #4. This involved installing a 5km (450mm dia) pipeline from the top of the Lyttleton Tunnel through the residential area of Heathcote, under the railway, through the livestock paddocks, under the Heathcote River, and linking into one of Christchurch’s largest pump stations in Alport Place.

McConnell Dowell Ltd – Mobil Exxon Fuel Line

The Mobil Lyttleton to Woolston Pipeline (LWPL) was an existing DN100 pipeline which delivered 95 and 91 unleaded petrol (ULP) and automotive gas oil – diesel (AGO) from the Mobil Lyttleton terminal to the Mobil Woolston terminal. Future plans for the pipeline include transportation of Jet A1 aviation fuel.

A section of this pipeline ran through the Heathcote Valley Primary School property, and there was a larger buried DN150 pipeline in Kiwi Rail land, adjacent to the school. The scope of works was therefore to replace this section of the pipeline to divert the pipeline outside of the school boundary and down the Kiwi Rail corridor.

The replacement section of pipeline extended up the Bridle Path Road to a tie-in location above the Lyttelton Tunnel entrance of the Tunnel Road motorway at chainage 2950. The tie-in location on the downstream end of the replacement section was located beside Station Road after the location of the Heathcote Valley School at chainage 4160.

The total length of the replacement section was approximately 1210m, with the new pipeline section following a similar route to the old pipeline section in the Bridal Path Road.

Water Main Renewals – Southshore

CN4600003512 – Christchurch City Council

The Southshore Watermain Renewals project was awarded to UINZ in February 2021. The project consisted of 3.8km of DN180 watermain and 0.8km of DN63 submain including more than 10 major connections to the existing network. The pipe was successfully installed using both in-house trenchless technology and open trenching methods.

UINZ successfully utilised trenchless technology to reduce the impact and risk presented by ground conditions, including an extremely shallow water table and running sands. The methodology also reduced the impact to the local community and traffic congestion within the area of Southshore.

UINZ achieved ZERO service strikes with its trenchless technology.

With the trenchless methodology, UINZ delivered significant a reduction of the project’s carbon footprint by eliminating the requirement for trench and road reinstatement. This also reduced carbon emissions from congestion to local traffic.

Roxborough Developments

(Stormwater) Southbridge Development

Southbridge Developments was a new subdivision in the Southbridge town of the Selwyn District.

The project involved upgrading the Selwyn District Council’s (SDC) stormwater retention including building a large outfall system for the 100-year flood plan. This project included 300m of 525mm concrete pipe with 15 sumps, 8 large manholes, one bypass structure, and an outfall into the retention ponds.

All works were completed by UINZ and inspected by Lindsay Wilson from SDC. The works included benching of the manholes and epoxying of the joints, the CCTV was completed with ZERO defects

Devcorp Limited

Silverstream Kiwirail Pipe Ram

This was a complex Pipe Ram in wet sandy conditions under the Kiwirail Corridor and adjacent to the Kaiapoi River stop bank for stormwater removal at the expanded Silverstream development.

As subcontractor to Devcorp Limited, we installed 24 metres of 711mm steel casing underneath the Kiwirail corridor on grade without affecting train traffic or the integrity of the rail line.

At our recommendation, a two-pot epoxy coating was applied the internal surface of the steel casing so the steel casing could be used as the storm water conduit rather than having to sleeve an additional pipeline through the casing. This was signed off and approved by the Waimakariri District Council in the design stage as this was the first time this method had been used in the district.

This innovation allowed the project to continue, on time and below budget as at the time there were significant supply chain issues caused by the Covid 19 global pandemic which meant the materials required to deliver the original design would not be available in New Zealand for an undetermined timeframe.

This was a very complex pipe ram installation due to the critical nature of the grade required given it was for gravity stormwater in wet sandy conditions. Because the steel casing was being rammed under the critical rail corridor infrastructure, this required a lot more attention to detail and process to ensure all of the stakeholders were aware of and able to approve our methods prior to construction.
